Age of Empires II: The Forgotten originally started as a modding project back in 2011, called Age of Empires II: Forgotten Empires. The project got gradually out of hand to the point where we felt confident on showing our mod to Microsoft, hoping there might be room to breathe new life into the decade old classic that Age of Empires II is.

Little did we know they were already working on their own revival of the series with a HD reboot of the game. After this proved to be successful we were offered the chance to turn our modding project into an official part of the series. An offer we couldn’t possibly refuse. For a full story on how the project came to life, please check out “The Story so far…”

Improved AI? What improved AI?

Bert Beeckman

That one is coming in patch 3.6, coming soon™

Matheus Pulicci

I see u guys have improved so much ai’s behavior and i suppose it’ll go on. I realised that new civilizations Ai’s are normally stronger than AOK and TC civs. They research all the blacksmith techs (Slavs doesn’t the infantry armor) and produce the same units, upgrading them to elite. In TC, i think Teutons was the most powerful AI when we talk about research and improve their army. They research to Siege Onager (never saw any other civ did so) and research almost (if not all) their blacksmith and university upgrades. Well, i hope i could get understandable. So… Read more »

Bert Beeckman

Hmmm, it’s weird that it doesn’t do those imperial upgrades properly, because it definitely should. Then again, the old AI will be completely thrown out in the next patch, then none of those things should happen anymore 🙂

I know. I’m being sarcastic. You guys basically advertised the DLC will be shipping with improved AI by releasing the same for the mod version.

While that’s unforgivable as a paying customer, I have been patient since I know the difficulties that you guys have been facing (Userpatch, ancient coding, limited team members etc).

Edit: I think I recognize that Cyanide and Happiness DP from the steam forums. Is that you, Cysion?

Bert Beeckman

Yeah that’s me 🙂

The AI is indeed waaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue, but at least it’s coming. No excuses though, it should’ve been in release.

I get some Questions, sorry my Inglish not so good.

Why geht AOE 2 HD Forgotten not 1000 Pop?, What is with Multiplayer on other Communitys as Steam? What is with the Colour Chance for PC Player? What is with Bigger Size Houses for more Pop? And at least, what is with the Sound of People by the new Campains, like the AOK/CONQU Campain? What is with britons? they s*cks in late imp wars very hard because they get not profite from upgrades from earlier expansions. And why not a guide menu for some tactics?

Thank very much for answer

IT must be have AOE HD on steam to play AOEFE on steam?, i ask for sure i dont buy 10$ for AOFE only

Bert Beeckman

Correct, the HD version is required before you can get AoF on Steam.

Robert Booth

hey this might just be my computer being really dumb, but whenever i try to reopen AoFE from the C drive it just closes down whenever i try to get into a saved game or campaign or anything except the menus. this also happened before i got AoFE but i easily got around it by opening and closing the Disc Drive manually, and starting AoE 2 from that. any ideas on how fix this??

Manimanito Fdz

I hope the creators take time to read this comment. I REALLY enjoy this game. Both the mod and the HD steam version. For the new civs, I would only make a few changes and they would only be for the Incas and the Slavs. I think the Incas need a cheaper eagle warrior or at least a gold economic bonus. Maybe something with an elite slinger unit? Both the Mayans and the Aztecs get an economic bonus but more importantly an eagle warrior bonus in combat. The extra speed is nice for the Incas but in the Imperial age… Read more »

Thanks for the kind words =) We currently have no plans to change unit skins for generic units per civ because as you said: it’s a lot of work. And if you do it for a few, you kinda have to do it for everyone. As for the balance ideas: Slavs are definitely strong enough already in imp that they don’t need hand cannoneers. It’s true that they are not good in the ranged compartment, but they definitely make up for that with their cheaper and fully upgradeable siege. Scorpions are really a good option for them. Incas are a… Read more »

For real though I understand the time and effort you guys put into making this and glad you did. The unit skins are no biggie and I can’t imagine how long that would take. I was just saying it would be super cool ha. Everybody has their own ideas on how to make the game “better” but you guys are the ones who make it and have legitimate people test it for balance and I respect your decisions. Actually as I’ve played with the Incas more I do really appreciate their feudal tower rush and i usually support with archers.… Read more »

sorry my english not too good

when i have instal the forgotten empire ihaved problem
the program not launch and iwant too ask how to solve tihs problem ???

Peyton G.

Is it at all possible to make a hard copy of the expansion pack when fully done at least that is compatible with older computers? I have two computers (1 for internet and the other is just an old computer I didn’t want to throw out and it doesn’t have internet). I have been an avid AoE fan (my favorite being AoE2) and when I saw that there was an expansion for it again I was excited but then realized it was through steam. I know I could just play it on the newer computer but I really don’t want… Read more »

The Forgotten Empires game there will be yet another patch or expansion? Cause I saw on a website a patch (unofficial), with some interesting things. Two new civilizations (Sioux and Portuguese) and their unique units (genitour – Portuguese and Dog Soldier – Sioux). An update to the Hand-Cannoneer (Arquebuster). And a technology market (Breed). Why not harness those ideas to further enhance the game?

Bert Beeckman

We have no more plans to add more civs to the game, but we’re flattered that other people are making mods for the mod 😀

and other stuf? like eye-candy fo the scenario editor?

Bert Beeckman

We add very small stuff each patch. Last patch had huntable elephants and relic carts

Juan Pablo Wärthon Wu

I have those units on my mod too, but the name is “Arquebusier” not “arquebuster” ://
and I added new techs in the mill, university and the siege workshop 🙂

Satyaki sil

You got that mod from heavengames, right?

how do i get sioux civ??

Edgar Samuel O. Nascimento

there was the version 1.8 and 1.3 of Mod. I had forgotten empires of the Sioux civilization, but it was replaced by Iroquois. I personally would prefer to continue the Sioux. Including the two versions have saved on my PC. Sioux with and without them. This Mod this site:

Hi Edgar, I and my family and friends started playing AOE2 as soon as it was released and have been playing ever since. At the present moment we have all become parents and still get together on weekeds around 9-10 people and play it out 4v4 till morning. Thanks for the MOD. Is it possible that I send you a wishlist of certain changes to be made to AOFE to suit the rules we have been playing with. For Instance, We could give the king in regicide mode a horse and a sword and give it attack of 100 also… Read more »
