We’ve been waiting a long time on posting an official statement regarding Forgotten Empires & Age of Empires II HD. But here it is. We’re getting our daily dose of mails, and these are some of the most returning questions:
Is Forgotten Empires compatible with AoE2HD?
No, it isn’t. AoFE only runs on your original copy of AoE2 + the Conquerors.
Will Forgotten Empires be ported to AoE2HD?
We would love to! However, there are a few things to consider: AoE2HD is still in development, at the time of writing, patch 2.1 for AoE2HD has been released and they’re already working on 2.2. Of course you can only mod a finished game, otherwise you’ll run into trouble soon 😛 Other than that, it will just take a lot of time: quite a few changes came with AoE2HD. All for the better of course, but modding wise, there’s a lot of new challenges. 32-bit terrains and SLP-specific palettes come to mind (all for better graphical goodness!)
So yes, we’re looking into things, but it will take some time. But we all have a bit of patience on a 14 year old game I guess? 😉
What’s your opinion on AoE2HD?
It’s the best thing that happened to AoE2 since it’s release. Official support is what was lacking in the community for ages. And I’m sure they will resolve any issues that will come up with the game in the near future. AoE2 is a game with a huge legacy, I doubt they ever want to let go of that again.
Yeah! It would be awesome! AND it would help you guys get more support in the future! But will you still make future updates of AoFE compatible for normal AoE2 + The Conquerors once the final patch for AoE2HD is completed?
Honestly I wouldn’t worry too much about AoE2HD until FE is further along it’s great don’t get me wrong but it could use some work like those campaigns… What’s surprised me is so far no one has made a civ add on for mod workshop granted for AoC it pretty much is a whole revamp of the game I would think porting the civs over for instance would be relatively easy though the graphics might need improving for that I haven’t bought HD yet mostly because my current setup is old school 1024×800 so there wouldn’t be much advantage except… Read more »
I’ve heard a lot about Forgotten Empires, especially lately with the release of AoE2HD, so I’m extremely interested to see if you guys will port this over to the official HD re-release. Heard so many good things. 🙂
I suppose, for the port, you wouldn’t need to bother with the resolution update, seeing as how quite a large number of resolutions are now supported by the re-release. But I would love to see everything else – the civs, the techs, maps, etc. – all come over. If you decide to port it over, best of luck! 😀
Is it worth the trouble? I hear a lot of people are quite pissed at how little was improved. imo aofe is far superior to AoE2HD, at this point at least.

The HD is not improving the game. just the graphics.

Incorrect sir. The MS Ryzon and the devs already stated that lots of changes under the hood (hard code within the engine) were completely changed or optimized to take advantage of modern processors.
This benefits unit AI greatly in addition to allowing a higher pop cap.
AOEFE HD IS the future,we would like to see the new graphics along with the forgotten empires improvements
I’m really happy with the HD version. It may seem like small things, but but large monitor support, updated multiplayer support, and the ability to play with 500 pop is fantastic.
It wasn’t until I started playing AoEII HD that I learned about Forgotten Empires, and I’m eager to play it! I know I’ll have to wait awhile, but that’s alright.
Last time I played AOE II HD it was horribly laggy and worse than the original game. Not sure if they have managed to fix that in the last two weeks.
indeed aoe2 hd has many bugs,but i think it deserves forgotten empires to be transfered in hd graphics.
Dont forget to reallow play a 4vs4 with 8 computer players.They removed it and human cannot select a AI to play in his position
I really miss LAN game in AoE2HD, so I’ll stick with AoE2+Conquerors 🙂
