A new expansion isn’t complete without a new set of campaigns for you to complete and this time we’re sending you on a trip to the African continent and its surrounding areas.
Lessons from the past
But first, let’s take a look back at the campaigns in Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten. After seven campaigns, we have a lot of feedback to go by and we even adjusted our design style during the development of The Forgotten based on it. The most loved campaigns are the ones that are open, leave a lot of room to build and offer various tactical options to destroy your enemy. So called “fixed force” scenarios where you lead a limited army through various quests are less popular but still a quintessential part of each campaign in Age of Empires II HD.
So we’re going further down that road: more open maps, less side quests and generally a whole lot of cities to conquer.
Epic of Sundiata
The first campaign we’re revealing is about Sundiata Keita, founder of the Mali Empire and the first “King of Kings” of Mali. His tale is one of the most famous epics in the area and has been told from generation to generation for many centuries. And now it will be digitally immortalized in the Age of Empires universe as well!

Last but not least, your voices have been heard! The African Kingdoms expansion will feature English voice acted campaigns!
Next up
We’ll have a special little competition at the end of September where you can make yourself part of the game. And in October’s dev blog, we’ll go deeper into the game’s balance and spotlight one of the new units, which despite only having an attack of “1”, is actually incredibly strong.

i am very glad to hear jorgito is the artist, so we might expect at some time his beautifull soldiers!
Doubtful as Jorgito himself said he is only doing buildings.
I hope not, they indeed are beautyful but too complex, just don’t know what to do against a blob of mixed units as they are difficult to recognize.
There plans to add new content to the already existing civs? The previous expansions get the imperial/castle age unique techs.
There is still too much lag to even play the game in multi-player, why have the frame rate issues not been fixed yet?
It has been fixed, I have no problems at all even when playing with people far away from me.
if i have not forgotten what i already wrote, or maybe yes, papyrus and reeds added as harvestable vegetation! important for scenario design and as eye candy!
There is something i would LOVE to see in this expansion. If you could update the old campaigns with the new civilizations. I love playing campaigns, expecially the old ones. And i think some of then could make use of a civilization update. Just like you said in the first teaser, El Cid campaign had Berbers, but came as Saracens due to the lack of a Berbers civ. You could change the civ. in the campaign to Berbers. I think there could be more examples for this: Adding some Italians in the Barbarossa/Atilla campaign. Like prehispanic monks, it is necessary a special sprite for african and prehispanic infantry. Current swordman is too european. Infantry with axe and rounded shield should be better.
I hope they don’t forget the original civs, as playing the Forgotten Empires I felt that the Mongols had lost their cavalry archer primacy. Maybe it’s just because I’m a bit of a Mongol history nerd, but I wished they had a bit more speed and hitting power.
